Therapy for Perinatal Wellbeing, Perinatal Anxiety, Postnatal Depression & Birth Trauma

You don’t have to go through the difficult journey into motherhood alone. Motherhood is often framed as a time of pure joy, but for women used to feeling in control, the transition into parenthood or the journey to get there can feel overwhelming, frightening, or disorienting. You might feel like you have lost yourself or that you don't recognise how you are feeling anymore. Whether you are navigating perinatal anxiety, postnatal depression, perinatal OCD, or you have experienced birth trauma or perinatal loss, we want to offer you a safe place to understand what is going on for you and how to find the way back to yourself.

What it might feel like

When you are going through perinatal distress, it rarely feels like just one thing. It often shows up as a wave of overwhelming feelings, thoughts, and physical sensations that can make you feel disconnected from yourself.

You might recognize yourself in some of these experiences:

Constant Fear and Intrusive Thoughts

Your mind feels like it is running continuous, frightening worst-case scenarios about your baby’s safety, your pregnancy, or your ability to cope. Unwanted "what-if" images or terrifying thoughts pop up uninvited, leaving you feeling hypervigilant. To soothe the panic, you might find yourself compulsively researching, checking on your baby, or repeatedly seeking reassurance from partners and health visitors just to feel a moment of relief.

Exhausting Overfunctioning and The Need for Control

When anxiety takes over, control feels like survival. You might feel driven to manage every routine, feeding schedule, and environment to perfection, worrying that if you drop the ball something bad will happen. You find yourself unable to sleep or rest, even when the baby is sleeping, because your body simply cannot switch off its internal alarm system.

Painful Numbness, Low Mood and Heavy Guilt and Shame

Instead of the joy you were told to expect, there might be a pervasive sense of numbness, sadness, or emptiness. You might find yourself crying without fully understanding why, feeling completely overwhelmed by simple daily tasks, or feeling a sense of disconnection from your baby or partner. You might feel a sense of grief - mourning your pre-baby identity, or processing a miscarriage, fertility struggles, or pregnancy loss.

The Lingering Experience of a Difficult Birth

If your birth experience was frightening, traumatic, or felt out of your hands, your body might still be holding onto that panic and terror. You might re-experience moments of the delivery through sudden flashbacks, a racing heart, or a deep urge to avoid anything that reminds you of it, from medical appointments and baby discussions to upcoming anniversary dates.

Please remember: Experiencing any of this does not mean you are failing, and it does not mean you don't love your child. It simply means your mind and body have been through a lot and you need support and compassion.

How we can help

So many women suffer in silence because they worry that admitting how hard this is makes them "bad mothers" or "failures." We want you to know that you are neither. Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, traumatised, or low in early parenthood is not a character flaw or a lack of strength but a human reaction to a profound biological, psychological, and emotional transition. In our sessions, we will create a safe, confidential space for you where you can talk about how you have really been feeling. We go entirely at your pace, using gentle, highly effective, evidence-based therapies tailored to bring you back to yourself:

  • Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT): We help you quiet the internal voice of guilt, shame, and impossible standards, replacing it with deep self-compassion and emotional safety.

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): For birth trauma or pregnancy loss, EMDR gently unburdens your mind and nervous system from frightening memories, allowing you to recall what happened without re-experiencing the physical horror or panic.

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): We work together to unpack terrifying intrusive thoughts, health anxiety, or OCD compulsions, showing you how your mind is trying to protect you and giving you practical tools to quiet the alarm systems.

We bring senior clinical expertise and compassionate care to every session. You can read more about our backgrounds, qualifications, and approaches on our About Us page.
