Therapy for Psychological difficulties during perimenopause and menopause

Menopause is often framed as just a series of physical symptoms, but for women used to feeling in control, the psychological and emotional shifts can feel disorienting, frightening and overwhelming and might make you feel like you don't recognise yourself anymore. You might feel like your brain is behaving differently, or that you're on an emotional rollercoaster. Whether you are navigating sudden anxiety, low mood, rage, brain fog, or the profound identity shifts that accompany this time, we want to offer you a safe place to understand what is going on for you and how to find the way back to yourself.

What it might feel like

When you are going through perimenopause or menopause, it rarely feels like just one thing. It often shows up as overwhelming feelings, thoughts, and physical sensations that can make you feel disconnected from yourself and your body.

You might recognize yourself in some of these experiences:

Unexplained Anxiety and Panic

Your mind and body feel as though they are on high alert for no apparent reason. You might experience sudden spikes of panic, a racing heart, or a terrifying loss of confidence in situations—at work or socially—that you used to handle with ease. You may find yourself waking in the middle of the night with a surge of dread, unable to quiet your thoughts.

Exhausting Over-functioning and Loss of Capacity

When brain fog, memory lapses, or physical fatigue set in, you might find yourself pushing twice as hard to maintain the high standards you’ve always held. You might feel driven to over-prepare, over-check, and hold everything together at work and home, leaving you feeling profoundly exhausted, burnt out, and worried that you can no longer rely on your own mind.

Emotional Fluctuations, Low Mood, and Loss of Joy

You might experience sudden, intense surges of anger or rage that feel completely out of character, followed by deep guilt or sadness. Instead of feeling grounded, there may be a pervasive sense of flatness, tearfulness, or anxiety about who you are becoming. You might feel a sense of grief or a shifting role within your family and career.

Cumulative Life Demands
This hormonal transition often collides with a unique time of life—caring for aging parents, supporting teenage children, and navigating demanding professional roles. Trying to hold space for everyone else while your own internal world feels unstable can leave you feeling completely depleted and deeply isolated.

Please remember: Experiencing any of this does not mean you are failing, losing your mind, or weak. It simply means your mind and body are going through a significant neurological and biological transition, and you need support and compassion.

How we can help

So many women suffer in silence during perimenopause because they worry that admitting how hard it is means they are not coping. We want you to know that you are neither. Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low, or angry during this transition is not a character flaw or a lack of strength, but a natural reaction to a profound biological, psychological, and emotional shift. In our sessions, we will create a safe, confidential space for you where you can talk about how you have really been feeling. We go entirely at your pace, using gentle, highly effective, evidence-based therapies tailored to bring you back to yourself:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): We work together to help you regain a sense of mastery over anxiety, sleep disruption, and catastrophic thinking, giving you practical, grounding tools to quiet your nervous system and rebuild confidence in your mind.

  • Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT): We help you quiet the harsh internal critic that tells you to "just get on with it," replacing self-judgment with deep self-compassion, emotional safety, and grace for you and your body.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): We support you in navigating the identity shifts of this life stage, helping you process grief, set essential boundaries around your energy, and reconnect with a sense of purpose that honours who you are today.

We bring senior clinical expertise and compassionate care to every session. You can read more about our backgrounds, qualifications, and approaches on our About Us page.
